Occasionally, species like trout seem to shy away from conventional live baits and artifical lures. In these situations, many anglers employ spinning tackle to fish artificial flies normally used with fly-fishing tackle. Due to the near weightlessness of artificial flies, the angler needs to add a bubble (a small, rounded plastic object, similar to a bobber) to the presentation for casting and depth control purposes.
With a bubble attached 1 to 4 feet ahead of the fly, the angler is able to cast and fish the fly just like a lure.
Bubbles are often clear, clear blue, or clear green to match certain water conditions, and can be filled and sealed with water according to depth requirements. An unfilled bubble will keep a fly at or near the surface; a completely full bubble will sink the fly to deeper water.
